Bioreactors<\/strong> are optimal environments for organisms to convert raw materials into desired products<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Insect Bioreactors<\/strong> convert biowaste into nutrient-dense compost<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Benefit: Capture economic value from biowaste that would otherwise be discarded<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Ex: Beer brewing fermentation, waste water treatment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

    Digital Twin<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    There is a<\/strong> multi-level abstraction between the<\/strong> physical world and virtual layers. From simplest to most complex<\/strong>, these are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • Digital model: isolated representation of physical system that predicts how it might behave (e.g. CAD files, 3D models in game design)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Digital shadow: digital model that updates with input from real physical system<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Digital twin<\/strong>: digital shadow that can be modified to alter the physical system in bidirectional system<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

      Objective<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      The objective of this capstone project is to build a perception monitoring system including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      • Segmentation<\/strong>: count individual insects, estimate population size<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Pose estimation<\/strong>: track insect movement, classify alive vs. dead, precursor to behavior analysis<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Phenotyping<\/strong>: determine insect size, growth stage<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Behavior analysis<\/strong>: classify more complex insect behaviors combining segmentation and pose tracking<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
